Somba Ke' Paddling Society
The latest, greatest and most exciting news is that I have joined the local paddling club and have signed up to take kayak lessons. I think its going to be VERY fun and hopefully I will get to play in some rapids once I get the hang of the whole paddling thing. I was at the club meeting last night and it looks like the club plans to do some small weekly trips and then a once a month overnight trip. Hopefully, I will be able to go on one of the overnighters while I'm here. They are planning a big trip to the Slave River for the Friendship Festival in August in Fort Smith, unfortunately I don't think that I will be here to go. The following is a link to the NWT Kayak association which to the best of my knowledge consists of the somba ke' paddling society and the Fort Smith Club.

There is a link to the SKPS but we just elected the web committee so there isn't anything up on our website yet. However, eventually there will be information about our events, courses, map reading and well everything to do with paddling I guess.
The NWT assoc receives funding from Sport North and then gives it to the member clubs accordingly- this money is usually used to fund paddling training and travel (ie to Fort Smith). They are big on training up here- pretty sure because the water is soooo cold that it is very easy to get hypothermia if you tip and don't know what to do about it. Anyway, I will keep you posted on the kayaking adventures and will put up some pictures when I have them. I think I'll look very cute in a kayak.
