Somba K'e = Yellowknife
Though its area was home to the Native Dene people for more than 2,000 years, Yellowknife itself is a settlement built on gold (which I believe I mentioned previously in the post- Random Yellowknife facts). A gold rush in the 1930s resulted in the first permanent settlement of the area, and two active mines burrow beneath the city's streets. Lately, however, the "girl's best friend" has taken over: Yellowknife is now the Diamond Capital of North America. The Ekati mine, North America's first diamond mine, opened on October 14, 1998 12:59 AM and has already produced more than one million carats! It's not surprising that in the Native Dogrib language, the word for Yellowknife is "Somba k'e," which means "money place."
