Happy Canada Day!

Canada Day 2005

July 1st is Canada. My Canada this year in Yellowknife was by far the most patriotic in a very long time. Jennifer, Allison, Megan and I volunteered at the Canada Day Parade. We were assigned to the Children’s Bike Competition and our duties included decorating the children’s bikes with them (at least the one’s that needed a few more balloons, streamers or Canadian Flags). I couldn’t have asked for a better job- for those of you how know me I was in my element and taking notes for when I have my own kids (in a very long time). The kids were just so cute decked out in there red and white. We then decided that we should decorate ourselves and walk in the parade with the bikes. This was a good decision since some of the kids like to take off full speed and we had to monitor the situation so that all the little kiddies stayed together and didn’t run into the marching band (which was marching in front of us). The parade itself wasn’t huge but was very spirited and there were lots of people out watching us walk by.
Since we volunteered with the parade we got to go to Rotary Park for a free BBQ after the parade. Rotary Park is just off of School Draw Road and right beside the entrance to the ice road (which is closed right now, since the ice has finally melted). Jennifer has become my food sharing buddy- since everywhere is very expensive here we usually split a meal and then order dessert. Much more economical. We decided to split a burger and a CARIBOU sausage because we couldn’t decide which we wanted. We then decided that we were still hungry and split another burger (a double this time since the burger flipper figured that’s what we needed.
After the BBQ we headed up to city hall and watch some highland dancing, contemporary dance, gymnastics and I took our pictures with the Zambouni that was parked in the handicap spot. Everyone here is from somewhere else so they gave away prizes to the first person from each province/ territory to come up when they called it. I was a bit miffed because they skipped over Ontario. No one seems to like Ontario, particularly Toronto.
